Beaches in Cannes

Are beaches in Cannes (or anywhere on the French Riviera) normally good for swimming in early May or is the water still cold this time of the year? Will we be better off taking a hotel with a pool instead? thanks!

Excellent question, I asked a simliar one in someone else%26#39;s thread but I will bump yours. I%26#39;m interested in the swimming as well.

We have spent a lot of time along the Golfe de Lyon during the month of May. While it is not as warm as during June, July, or August, one may still enjoy swimming particularily on warm sunny days. Average temperatures for May are 21° (70° F).

|||

Where exactly is the Golfe de Lyon? I%26#39;m curious, not having heard of it before.

|||

Perhaps my poor spelling has caused confusion. The Golfe de Lion (some maps show Golfe du Lion) is that area of the Mediterranean from Perpignan to Toulon.

|||

The only confusion is that the original question was about beaches on the French Riviera/Côte d%26#39;Azur, not elsewhere. But good to know.

Yes you can swim in May in Cannes. Bijou plage has the best water (although the whole bay of Cannes is rated highly for cleanliness). Bijou plage has benefit of a long slow entry via nice white sand. Our kids can play in it all day. In May, my husband and I need to swim and get warmed up, then find it %26#39;doable%26#39;. The water is really nice and warm in September, our favourite time for swimming and beaches, as it is less crowded than August and the water is still warm.

I find the beach better than the pools also because the weather along the seafront tends to be sunnier than up in the hills around Cannes. Thus, even if the weather report says rain in Nice, and friends in Mougin say they are in the clouds, we often find ourselves enjoying a sunny lunch on the beach in Cannes -- even in January! (Swimming in January is only really done by very fit looking octarians, who cross the Croisette for their daily constitutional.)

CannesDo ~%26gt; I like your name. I%26#39;m assuming by your post that the water in early July is nice and warm.

|||

What would the water temperature be?

|||

July would be between 22 - 24 c according to my husband.
