East Paris

I was reading a Paris travel guide that was written by well known author. This author stated that East Paris might not be a good place to stay. Does anyone have any idea what arrondissements he may be refering too? We are going to rent an apartment in Paris and we just want to make sure the area is relatively safe.

I have no idea. I live in %26quot;East Paris%26quot; which is something a local would never say and really means nothing. I live in the 12th and it is very nice.

just post the address(es) of any apartments you%26#39;re considering to get feedback on the locations.

very generally speaking, the %26#39;single digit%26#39; arrondissements are usually preferred by first-time visitors... (and often, repeat visitors give double-digits a try).

eeeeks!!

don%26#39;t know what happened there, but you get the point for sure now.. :)

Thank you. I had not read anything on this board or heard anything like that before but I thought I would ask.

I too do not know what %26quot;East Paris%26quot; means, any more than I would know what %26quot;East London%26quot; or %26quot;East New York%26quot; - or, I suspect, %26quot;East Atlanta%26quot; might mean.

So who is this %26quot;well known author?%26quot;

I doubt you will pick an apartment to stay at that is in an unsafe area. You%26#39;d probably have to work quite hard to do that. For the most part, Paris is MUCH safer than any American city. But if you tell us what area you are looking at, someone will surely be able to give you a first-hand description of its general character.

Hello Tigers,

Only people who have not explored the %26quot;east%26quot; side of Paris would say something so silly. The city has many wonderful areas and districts on the eastern side........many. Lots of history, interesting areas, good restaurants, safe and wonderful to explore.

If you want to be surrounded by people who most probably will speak to you in English and have a good income or if you are nervous about being among people who are different from yourself you could make yourself feel uncomfortable in some areas that are ethnically different.......I, for one, just love to explore on the %26quot;east%26quot; side, which I usually do......... always feeling perfectly safe. We stay in the 12th.

There is an advantage to being in the low numbered arrondissements close to the Seine.......many of the big tourist sites are basically in those so you can see and do a lot more easily.....and you will more often get menus in English!

Have fun. Its a great city and renting an apartment is a good way to make your stay better IMO.

Oh puleeeease! These stupid guidebooks (I don%26#39;t even have to ask which one because it%26#39;s patently stupid just for saying East Paris) are so filled with misinformation! They%26#39;re probably trying to make some distinction between the %26quot;chic%26quot; 8th and 16th and the %26quot;trashy rabble%26quot; that populate the 11th, 12th and 20th!! JOKING :)
