best base city for extended visit

First, thanks to all who take time to respond to the forums on TA! Four seasoned travelers planning a trip for late September into October. Planning to stay between 8-11 days. Doing day trips out to Provence region, Monaco and other coastal cities using rail, car and bus as transportation.

Leaning toward Nice as our base but wonder if Marsaille might be better or another another location around the Cote d%26#39;Azur?

Thanks so much,

Roxy

Hi Roxy,

I recommend that you stay in Nice, it is much more pleasant than Marseille, and safer too. And you have so many gorgeous places to visit that are not far from Nice, ie St Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Juan Les Pins, Monaco, Menton, Ventimiglia in Italy, San Remo, not to mention the little coastal towns such as Villefranche, Beaulieu and St Jean Cap Ferrat, and the ancient villages such as Eze.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday!

Endorse VF-lovers comments. Nice is the optimal travel hub, which offers you access to everywhere else, whilst still offering you somewhere to explore in its own right.

Marseilles will isolate you to immediate environs - Aix at best.

I did the three hour coach from Marseilles to Nice the other month - forced plane landing - never again!

Roxy -

See my response in your similar thread in the Nice forum for a slightly (but only slightly) different take on this.
