Dinner Musts? Suggestions?

Hello again. I%26#39;m going to try and surprise my mother and grandmother by making great dinner reservations but I am hoping for some help. I%26#39;m looking for a place or two with great french food and not too dressy (let%26#39;s say no suits required). Preferrably not too expensive although I would be able to bite the bill for one night if the other night isn%26#39;t as expensive.

Thanks for everyone%26#39;s help! This is our first time in Paris and seeing that it will probably be my grandmother%26#39;s only time here I want it to be perfect for her.

BTW - we are staying in St.Germain-de-Pres if that helps although I%26#39;m willing to go anywhere. :o)

|||

An excellent surprise for them would be to go to Jules Verne on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. Lunch menu on a week day is more affordable. Can%26#39;t beat the location!

Here%26#39;s a few suggestions, all really reliable in terms of food, all within the St. G. des P. area, and at different prices.

First, Allard, rue de l%26#39;Eperon, metro Odeon. Prix fixe menu 35€, à ala carte maybe 45-55€

Next, Vagenende, 145 Blvd. St Germain, gorgeous art nouveau décor. Prix fixe 23€, à la carte abourt 30-35€

Last, Chez Maitre Paul, rue Monsieur le Prince, metro Odeon. About 40€

I don%26#39;t think you could go wrong with any of these, but I think my7 pick wouild be Vagenende.

And here%26#39;s a link to a forum thread with a lot of suggestions for all kinds of places in the lower - i.e. close to the river - St. G. des P. area which includes more info on at least some of those rstaurants and a bunch more - cafés, tea-rooms, patisseries. All good stuff!

Try the Brasserie D%26#39;Ile St Louis, just across the brigde. Specialties are charcrout, cassolet and onion tarte. And a bottle of Bourgogne.

For an old-fashioned bistro with lots of atmosphere and good cheer head to Au Petit Marguery, in the 13th. It%26#39;s near the Place d%26#39;Italie. Another nice restaurant is Le Bistro de Breteuil, in the 7th; it%26#39;s on the Place de Breteuil. On a warm evening dining on the terrace is lovely.

A really nice restaurant in the 6th near the Saint Germain church is Le Belier , the restaurant at L%26#39;Hotel. The setting is gorgeous(decorated by Jacques Garcia), food is tasty and service warm and efficient. The main courses are arouns 30euros and there is a tasting menu at 50. The day we went it was only another party, but sometimes fills up quickly.

I heartly second Underhill%26#39;s suggestion of Le (Au) Petit Marguery, though it%26#39;s not quite as close as the ones I mentioned (and most of which KDKSAIL also recommended). Its%26#39;s on the Boulevard Port Royal on the southern edge of the 5th, and the nearest metro is Les Gobelins. The Grand Marnier soufflé is a dessert to die for.

Pricewise, I%26#39;d say it%26#39;s maybe a little elss expensive than Allard.

Also if you%26#39;re looking for something a little fancier than all the ones I%26#39;ve mentioned, look at Le Petit Zinc on rue St-Benoit in the 6th and La Ferme Saint Simon on rue St-Simon, just on the edge of the 7th. You can find them both on the same site as the others I mentioned - www.bestrestaurantsparis.com

I agree, all the restaurants mentionned in the posts are nice. But not as special as Jules Verne at the Eiffel Tower!
