Whats the best city in south of France to stay for 4 days...

I will be there the 1st weekend in June for 4 days. I have never been to the south of France before. I am thinking about staying in Old Town Nice. But I could stay in anywhere in the south of France.

My question is. Is Nice where I want to stay? Or is there somewhere else in the south of France not to far from nice airport?

Thanks for your help

Nice is the best city from the point of view of getting to other places as quickly and easily as possible. It is a good size city, which of course has its pluses (museums, more restaurants and hotels, nightlife, shops, etc.) and its minuses (traffic, noise, crowds etc.)

If you want a more relaxed place to stay, consider Villefranche-sur-Mer, just a few minutes from Nice, and on the direct rail line to Monaco, Menton and Ventimiglia.

I agree with IrishRovr. Nice has a practical side to it, it connects to everywhere by bus or train. No need for a carfor a stay so short.

I kinda like Nice%26#39;s Old Town and would prefer it to Villefranche IMHO, but Villefranche is so nice anybody would love to stay there.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Nice has the benefits of a large city with the advantage of being on the sea and having a charming old town. It is busy with lots of traffic and currently there are some major works affecting parts of the city. Personally, it is one of (if not my) favourite city.

Alternatives are Cannes - a much smaller town with a more Provencal ambience and the benefit of sandy beaches; other smaller towns with their own attractions are Antibes and Menton - both beautiful in their own right. Another alternative is to stay in the country of Monaco which is on a direct train link from Nice.

In fact, all of the places mentioned are directly linked by good train services allowing for easy day trips between them.

Your choice!

It depends what you want out of your 4 days in the south of France. Nice will give you a large, though compact, town, good shopping, cafes, restaurants, culture etc, etc, even beach life (though it%26#39;s all pebbles) so if it%26#39;s a buzzing, lively busy place you want then Nice would be great AND be close to the aiport. If it%26#39;s 4 days of tranquil sunny beaches you want then you will need to look elsewhere, Villefranche, as suggested, is a good compromise. If you have a look at the following link taken from the Nice airport web site you will see that the airport has good fast motorway bus links from the airport terminals to many towns and villages surrounding Nice so you will have a large choice of good places to stay that are all well-served with fast express buses to the airport. Perhaps you need to decide what it is you want out of your 4 days, then have a hunt through a guide book at some of the different places around, there is such a variety of holidays you could choose, it%26#39;s a pity you only have 4 days, lol.

Thank you for the help. I%26#39;m not sure what I will be doing out there. I will rent a car for 1 of the days to see some of the outer areas. And take the train around town.

So where should I stay then Villefranche or Nice. Which city gives you more of that french feeling? I was thinking about renting an apartment in Nice.

Thanks

Renting apartments is usually for 7-days and more stays. What is close to an apartment is an apartment-hotel e.g. Citadines Promenade or CVitadines Buffa. I like the 1st one better, since it is located in a more residential area and closer to the beach. The Buffa one is closer to downtown but still a good 10 minutes walk.
