French Audio CD - learning the basics - any recommendations?

Hi guys

Well August is fast approaching and I know about 50 words in French and most of them are cooking terms lol.

Can anyone recommend an intensive course, preferably on audio CD so that I can listen to on the way to work etc.

Many thanks

Jo x

there are some %26quot;learn in your car%26quot; CD/cassettes

Also try the BBC website - they are pretty good. And your local library will probably have something to get you started.....

Don%26#39;t know about CDs but here is one online:

Free French lessons:

Most French language courses don’t have pronunciation of place names. You can find many cities and locations such as Montparnasse in the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary with spoken pronunciation, just click on the little red horn next to the word to hear it pronounced.

http://merriamwebster.com/

You can also save the sound file to your computer for further reference. Here%26#39;s how:

In the pop window find the underlined text that says %26quot;Click here to listen with your default audio player.%26quot; Right click on this line and choose %26#39;save target as...%26#39; You will then get a box where you can save a wav file. Make a new directory on your computer called %26#39;French Pronunciation%26#39; and save the file there. You can add many such as Arrondissement, St Germain, Montmartre etc. to the folder.

The BBC language website also has MP3 downloads of essential phrases - your daughter might like that too :-)

Immediately available and free:

I think it%26#39;s quite useful. Lots of pronunciations and self paced.

My husband bought Oxford Take Off in French with CD and Bookmark. It%26#39;s great as it says the phrase in French and then gives you time to repeat it. It also has conversations so you can practice hearing the question and your response.

You can buy it from Amazon.

Not a recommendation for a specific basic French language audio-course---though the ones from PIMSLEUR-- www.pimsleurapproach.com/learn-french.asp? --are very comprehensive.

One of the most overlooked and best resources for travel video and foreign language audio courses is often your own public or nearby college or university libraries. Most will allow you to borrow foreign language audio courses. In this way can %26#39;..try out..%26#39; a few to see which one(s) suit your needs and purposes best...before you go out and spend your hard earned money of personal copies.

My wife and I tried a few

The best by far was PIMSLEUR

most tend to give you sentences to say out of context, it didn%26#39;t work for me at all.

The Pimsleur starts with a basic convesion and builds on it.

We did the basic 8 cd%26#39;s from barns and Nobel before we left, gave us very basic I want - where is type language skills.

I would recomend over the drive by series.

Check e-bay for the basic series.

I also recommend Pimsleur to learn just the basics in conversation. When I finished their 10CD beginner course before my first trip, I thought it was really cute that I knew how to ask someone what they wanted to drink and also ask them back to my place. Are those the essentials?.... They do teach you everyday phrases you will use too and they do seem to stick with you more than with other CDs I have used. But, keep in mind this is purely conversational and you won%26#39;t be able to read French.

I also really like about.com that Metromole recommends above for a better understanding of the language. It is really an extensive website and you can sign up for their 6 week free email course too.

Bon Chance!
