Villefranche-sur-Mer or Nice to stay for 4 days?

How far is Villefranche-sur-Mer to Nice by train time wise? Would staying in Villefranche-sur-Mer give you more of that French Riviera feeling?

It%26#39;s only 6 or 7 minutes from Nice to Villefranche by train.

I suppose it all depends what you mean by %26quot;that Riviera feeling.%26quot; Nice is a big city by the Mediterranean. Villefranche is a small Mediterranean town -if you understand the distinction I am making. In my terms the answer to your question would probably be yes - but, as I said, it all depends on what exactly you mean by the question.

You can easily get from Nice to all the places along the coast by train (or bus in the case of Èze) - St. Raphael, Cannes, Antibes, Monte Carlo, Menton, Ventimiglia, even San Remo. No need to rent a car unless you are planning to head up into the hills above Nice or perhaps to St-Paul-de-Vence.

Hang on I think there is a principle here - as long as its your intention to get around and sample the Riviera, then its not that important where you stay, other than thats probably where you will take your evening meal. (Now there are a dozen or more lovely restaurants in Villefranche. And three hundred or more in Nice.I am biased too)

There is no one place that is %26quot;The Riviera%26quot; Visit at least four or five to begin to get the flavour. Some brassy seafront glamour, a little medieval back country, and lots in between.

We used to have a flat in Nice and now have one in Villefranche. Villefranche is an altogether more relaxing experience and, during the day, access to Nice is easy and very cheap. It is not so easy in the evening as the last bus leaves Nice at 8pm and there is no train that stops at Villefranche between 21.13 and 23.03 (times leaving Nice Ville)

I would say that hotels are better value in Villefranche and are usually in quiet and virtually traffic free locations that are not common in Nice but restaurants in Villefranche are significantly less good value.

I suspect that your age might be the deciding factor. If you are young and want to stay out late you would certainly be happier in Nice. If you are not so young and/or would like to be able to escape to a more tranquil place after some hours in the bustle of Nice, Villefranche would be the better choice. Another advantage of Villefranche is that, unlike Nice, it has a sandy-ish beach. I am a big fan of Nice but I know people who don%26#39;t like it at all. I have never met anyone who didn%26#39;t like Villefranche.
