A twist on the 'where to eat question'

I%26#39;ve seen many recommendations on where to eat, but which restaurants would you avoid - mediocre food, too tourisy etc?

|||

Hippopotamus. Like the steakhouses in London they are built for people scared of flavour. Unfortunately, this seems to mean it%26#39;s mainly North Americans of a certain 6type, and English people who fit the same profile. Bland, boring, all the floavour washed out, slightly textureless. The food%26#39;s no better ;¬)

As with any city, avoid any restaurant that has laminated menus with pictures of the food on it. Except if It%26#39;s Peruvian or Mongolian and you NEED the pics to tell if it%26#39;s fish or desert.....

|||

I have to say that the Hippopotamus I go to is very nice and casual. They serve a great steak tartare and a very good magret de canard.

This is not the type of place you would go to spend an evening with friends but it serves its purpose: families and people who at that particular moment do not want to spend too much time or money in a restaurant.

One to avoid IMO is the Bistro Romain.

Chez Clement is OK but only if you stick to the grilled meats and their %26quot;grandes assiettes rotisserie%26quot;.

|||

I agree with the photographer about %26quot;Bistro Romain%26quot;. Really a tourist trap. Chez Clément is a bit better.

We are staying for 1 night at the Marriott Champs-Elysee, are there any %26#39;must avoid%26#39; restaurants near there? How about 1 I must try (2 adults, 2 teenagers)?

I love moules-frites for a quick casual meal, but...

For me it would be Léon de Bruxelles. Mind you I%26#39;ve only eaten there once, when I needed a something in a hurry before catching a train, so I may have been unlucky. Still, over-cooked, half-cold mussels, mediocre frites, a waiter who took the definition of indifference to new levels - all in all, in my book a place to be avoided even at the cost of going hungry.

You might look at Le Boeuf sur le Toit on rue Colisée. It%26#39;s one of the Flo group of brasseries, and therefore I would think should be pretty dependable, with a better than average brasserie menu so %26quot;something for everyone,%26quot; and enough %26quot;Wow!%26quot; factor to please you all.

You can get a 15% discount if you book online - I think at least 24 hours in advance.

I%26#39;ve not eaten here, though I have at other restaurants in the group, and always well. Others may be able to comment with more detail.

We loved Boeuf sur le toit, we took 3 t/agers and they and we, thought it was really fun and great atmosphere. Looks like a fish shop on the outside, opens up to huge seating area with loads going on. Not cheap but not hugely priced either. Need a fair knowledge of French tho%26#39; menus are not translated.

|||

Boeuf sur le toit has been one of the restaurants I%26#39;ve been looking at so it%26#39;s great that it%26#39;s getting some recommendations. Is it within walking distance of the Champs- Elysee?

|||

hello there.. please by all means avoid Au Bon Coin in the 13th arr...not only did my husband get a horrible case of food poisoning, adding insult to injury our CC was charged 4 times instead of 1 time.

|||

The Boeuf sur le Toit is also a restaurant which i loved, great salmon and crème brûlée

Le Boeuf sur le Toit is perhaps a five minute walk from your hotel. Walk along the av. des Champs Élysées towards the place de la Concorde, i.e. away from the Arc de Triomphe. The rue du Colisée is either the first or second street on the left, about 100 yards if I am remembering the location of the Marriott correctly. (Near the rue la Boétie, but I%26#39;m not sure which side of that street the hotel is on.) The restaurant is perhaps 300 yards from the Champs Élysées.
