Eating in Nice

I will be visiting Nice for the first time next week. I was wondering, are there any reccomendations or concerns you may be able to point out to me? Also, I must mention I am American and this will be my first visit to Europe. I am VERY excited to be visiting lovely Nice! I have read that Nice was a part of Italy only 100 years ago, so there is alot of Italian food available in Nice, as well as French. Can you reccomend any good places to eat? I am staying at Le Meridien. Thanks!

Just back from Nice after a lovely week there. I prefer eating in smaller places that offer good value local cuisine. As you said Niçoise cuisine is a melange of French Provençal and northern Italian. Specialities are daube - a beef stew served with gnocchi or fresh pasta, beignets - fritters of vegetables and fish, various stuffed vegetables and, of course, the salade Niçoise. My favourite restaurants are:

Acchiardo, rue Droite

La Table Alziari, rue François-Zanin

L%26#39;Escalinda, rue François-Zanin

La Tapenade, rue Sainte-Réparate

Le Lunel, Quai Lunel

Le Rive Droite, ave. Saint-Jean-Baptiste

Chez Davia, rue Grimaldi

The first 4 places are all within the Vieille Ville. Le Lunel overlooks the old port and is a great place for lunch. Le Rive Droite is across the road from Musée d%26#39;Art Moderne. Chez Davia is very popular so either book in advance or arrive at 7:00pm when it opens for dinner to ensure a table. The food is great but the service can be a little crazy at times.

Abnd if you want an excellent dinner at a reasonable price, go to Le Siècle at the West End Hotel. You must reserve. Ask for a tble facing the sea on the Promenade des Anglais

Our favorite place to eat in Nice is L%26#39;Ecurie, at 4, rue du Marché in Vieux Nice. The restaurant has Niçois specialties--have the petit farçis if they%26#39;re offered, small veggeis stuffed with a meat/rice mixture--as well as typical Italian and French food. The green salad with garlic croutons is especially good, as are the pizzas.

If you like seafood, head to the Café de Turin, near the modern-art museum. For good breakfasts and lunches you can%26#39;t beat Le Pain Quotidien, on the left-hand corner of the street as you walk up to the Cours Saléya from Le Meridien.

There are major roadworks in the area around Place Garibaldi due to the construction of the tram system. This has curtailed any terrace seating at the Grand Café de Turin which may impact upon the dining experience there.

Barracuda in Rue Meyerbeer does some fine Italian dishes and their deserts are the best i%26#39;ve found in Nice.

I would recommend that you be wary of the cab drivers overcharging or shortchanging, better still use the public transport it%26#39;s good.
