Quick easy way out of the Paris metro area?

Hi! We%26#39;re staying in Paris, and then would like to take a train to Melun, rent a car there and continue on our trip- thus avoiding driving through the busy Paris Metro area. Is that possible? Does anyone know what the train schedule is, and a car rental place in Melun?? Or is this just not a good idea.....

Thanks for any help!

I think it%26#39;s a great idea! I%26#39;ve driven in Paris and it doesn%26#39;t faze me that much any more, but I%26#39;ve still been known to do just what you are doing, mostly to get clear of the city and its suburbs more quickly.

You can get to Melun from central Paris very easily, either on the RER D line, or by surface train from the Gare de Lyon. It shouldn%26#39;t take you much more than a half hour.

I don%26#39;t know if there is a car rental agency in Melun, but the likeliest one would probably be either Europcar or Avis. You can check at

www.avis.fr

or

www.europcar.fr

I%26#39;d be inclined to book through AutoEurope at

www.autoeurope.com

rather than direct. That will usually save you some $$. At least check their prices for comparison purposes.

My only question would be whether Melun is the best place for you to start out from. Depending on where you actually want to go after you pick up your car, there may be a better location. Personally, as long as I was doing this, I%26#39;d probably want to get a bit farther away from Paris. If you let us know what your plans are, somebody might have a better suggestion.

There is, BTW, nothing of great interest in Melun - unless you wanted to visit the long-term high security prison in the town, that is. :%26gt;)

You can research timetables to Melun at

www.ratp.fr for the RER and

www.voyages-sncf.com for commuter trains.

Hi IrishRover, Well, we were planning on seeing Fontainbleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte from Melun, and then continue just a little further south to maybe something like Semmur en Auxiois, or Vazelay. We have a couple of nights in this area, and then thought we go on over to the Loire Valley area for 2 nights before we have to leave for home...does anyone have any ideas/thoughts? After having spent 4 nights in Paris, we thought we would want to just be in charming little areas and relax more. Bye!
